COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A Coeur d'Alene couple says an owl flew into their 10th story apartment, apparently opened a bird cage and killed one of two canaries inside.

Sue Sausser tells the Coeur d'Alene Press (http://bit.ly/1riwYfi ) that she awakened Sunday to find bird droppings and feathers all over her apartment and a 6- to 8-inch tall owl behind a chest of drawers.

She says the owl flew out the window and perched on the balcony railing for a while before flying away.

Sue and Don Sausser found one of their canaries dead and the other quite spooked.

Wildlife education specialist Beth Paragamian says it's strange that an owl would be flying so high in an area without many tall trees and surprising that it would enter a residence.

Don Sausser says they plan on using twist ties to secure the door on the bird cage.
