POST FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Police officers have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the abandonment and abuse of a dog found in northern Idaho that later had to be euthanized.

Post Falls police say the boy abandoned Bridger the dog because he was unhappy with the animal. The boy told officers he decided to get rid of Bridger by throwing rocks and stabbing the dog with a knife. He later pushed Bridger into an irrigation ditch to die. Police found Bridger in late July in a park.

Veterinarians who treated him say they later had to euthanize him due to a number of medical problems. Police have charged the boy with cruelty to animals. He is being held in Kootenai County juvenile correctional facility and his bond will be set Monday.
