BAYVIEW, Idaho (AP) — Skeletal remains found in a remote forested area in northern Idaho have been identified and authorities are asking for help in trying to determine what happened.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office in a statement Tuesday says medical officials identified the remains as those of 44-year-old Billy Vaughn Davis of Coeur d'Alene. He was last seen by family in July 2014 and was reported missing in November 2014.

A hiker found the remains in early February. The sheriff's office says Davis lived a transient lifestyle and it was common for him to be out of contact for long periods of time. He was last seen wearing black jeans, a blue plaid hooded sweatshirt and brown hiking boots. Authorities say the cause of death is still being investigated.
