Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but after a long period in development, it seems ‘Sandman‘ creator Neil Gaiman‘s fantasy drama series ‘American Gods’ will be getting the TV treatment in the near future, courtesy of FremantleMedia. HBO had previously been in the running to adapt the revered fantasy novel, but will ‘American Gods’ finally come to reality after all?

According to Deadline, the latest incarnation of an ‘American Gods’ series has fallen to FremantleMedia North America, who will executive produce the drama with Gaiman himself, for an unspecified network. Currently, FremantleMedia has deals set up with A&E for an adaptation of ‘The Returned,’ along with The CW’s ‘Tomorrow People,’ and a developing drama with Spike.

For those unfamiliar with Gaiman’s work, ‘American Gods’ follows ex-convict Shadow Moon, who partners up with mysterious con-man Mr. Wednesday (secretly a god himself), becoming embroiled in a battle between classic mythological gods who have fallen out of style, and the “new” American gods based on greed, technology and celebrity. A few years ago, HBO had in mind to develop the drama with Tom Hanks‘ Playtone, though that project eventually bottomed out.

Well, what do you think? Is a good time for Neil Gaiman’s work to get the screen treatment, or will ‘American Gods’ fail to rise once again? What network would you want to see the project land on?
