NAMPA (KTVB) -- A 22-year-old convicted of beating a Nampa man to death in 2014 over $700 worth of drugs was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.

Raul Edgar Herrera will be eligible for parole after spending 35 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay a $5,245.50 fine.

Herrera was convicted of first-degree murder in July in the death of 46-year-old Jeffrey Dyer. A jury also found him guilty of robbery, burglary, second-degree kidnapping and aggravated battery.

Dyer's elderly father, who the victim lived with, was badly beaten and tied up during the break in. Prosecutors described the two men ransacking Dyer's home, looking for oxycodone pills they believed were inside the house.

Investigators connected Herrera and Cervantes to the murder after a tipster connected them to the murder. Cervantes admitted his role in the killing to investigators, later taking a plea deal and testifying against Herrera.

Herrera's sentencing was pushed back several times after his defense attorney, former gubernatorial candidate John Bujak, gave up his ability to practice law in lieu of discipline. The Idaho State Bar had sought Bujak's disbarment on ethical grounds unrelated to the Herrera case.
