MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — Police say a 22-year-old Moscow man severely injured his hand when he tried to ignite a homemade pipe bomb and the device exploded while still in his grip.

Latah County Sheriff's Lt. Brannon Jordan told the Lewiston Tribune (http://bit.ly/13FuyoE ) said the man, whose name was not released, drove to a rural road with his brother, planning to videotape the explosion of the pipe bomb. Jordan says when the man lit the bomb, however, it detonated in his right hand.

Jordan said the man is lucky to be alive, because the blast was powerful enough to damage the vehicle the men had driven to the scene. He said the incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed so far. It's a felony to construct a pipe bomb.
