BOISE, Idaho (AP) — More than 1,000 firefighters and an unusually large number of aerial drops appear to have slowed a west-central Idaho wildfire, though some residents in the region on Thursday are still being told to flee the area.

Fire managers say the 145-square-mile fire 3 miles east of Riggins and burning in timber is 20 percent contained.

Officials say ground-based crews with aerial support limited the size of spot fires southeast of Riggins.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management reopened the Lower Salmon River to rafters, but two takeout areas are closed meaning a longer float to a takeout near Riggins.

In northern Idaho, a 16-square-mile fire continues to threaten the historic Fenn Ranger Station, and residents in the area have been told to evacuate.
