More Earthquakes In Challis, Idaho

Mark Hufstetler, Pitamakan, wikipedia

Challis, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) For the last two weeks, a cluster of nearly 20 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater has shook Custer County Idaho, 6 to 14 miles north-northwest of Challis Idaho. The strongest earthquakes have been a 4.9 magnitude quake around 6:00 p.m. MDT on Saturday April 12th and a 4.1 magnitude quake on Thursday April 10th around 6:20 a.m. MDT. There have been no reports of damage from these quakes, but residents in the area have reported items knocked off wall and shelves and have been felt from as far away as the Wood River region just north of Ketchum.

While it is not uncommon to get a swarm of earthquakes in this region of central Idaho, the strength of some of these is a little unusual. The 4.9 magnitude quake on Saturday evening is the strongest of its kind since 2005.

Idaho has registered over sixty-five magnitude 4 or larger earthquakes in the states recorded history. Over the same time period, there have only been six magnitude 5 or larger earthquakes record. The strongest in the states history was a magnitude 6.9 earthquake back in 1983 near Borah Peak, Idaho. This quake caused widespread damage in Challis-Mackay area and is responsible for two deaths.

The question most people have regarding the seismic activity over the last two weeks here near Challis and over in Yellowstone is this a precursor of a bigger event? Experts agree that the current activity doesn’t necessarily predict a much larger event but doesn’t mean one is not possible.
