Mario Kart 8 Glides Off Shelves, Nintendo Still Loses Money

A strong sales showing from Nintendo across the board couldn’t save them from yet another operating loss, according to a first-quarter financial report filed by the company.

Mario Kart 8 has sold nearly three million copies worldwide since its launch in late May, accounting for nearly half of all of the Wii Us sold to date. 510,000 Wii U consoles were sold in the first quarter, a 200,000 unit improvement over the last quarter, and 3DS sales also rose with 820,000 units sold.

Despite all of the rising sales figures, the company still posted a operating lost of 9.4 billion yen or $92 million, blaming slow release schedules and a lack of big games as the reason. Nintendo hopes to turn this around starting with Mario Kart’s momentum and adding both versions of Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, and Bayonetta 2 to the consoles by the holidays.

We don’t understand how Nintendo could see higher sales figures yet still lose so much money. Perhaps development costs are higher than we originally assumed, but whatever it is at least it’s not as bad as it has been for the House of Mario. Nintendo mentions some big-name games that could help dig them out of this hole, but don’t forget about Amiibo, their upcoming NFC figurine line. If Skylanders and Disney Infinity have taught us anything, it’s that kids still love physical toys.
