NAMPA (KTVB) -- Police are investigating after a man's body was found in a Nampa canal Thursday morning.

The body was discovered at about 8 a.m. near 3rd Street North and 16th Avenue North, next to the Terry Reilly Health Services clinic.

"A passerby was walking over the bridge, looked over the edge there and saw what appeared to be the outline of a person in the canal," Nampa Police Sgt. Joe Ramirezsaid.

The body has been retrieved from the water, and a dive team is working to gather any evidence that may remain in the canal.

Police do not yet know how the man died, but Ramirez said detectives do not suspect foul play.

The victim was a white male in his teens or 20's. His identity is unknown.

"We are checking all our missing person's reports for the last few months as well as in the last 24 to 48 hours to try and determine who that person might be at this time," he said. "It's difficult to tell, because of the condition of the body at this point."

Ramirez said investigators were working to figure out how long the body has been in the water and whether it may have floated downstream from somewhere else.

Ramirez asked members of the public to avoid the area to allow room for emergency responders to work.  Anyone with information can contact their local law enforcement.
