PAYETTE, Idaho (AP) — A 19-year-old Oregon man was hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a train while trying to cross a railroad bridge over the Payette River in western Idaho. Payette County officials say Juan Silva of Ontario was walking on the train trestle near Payette shortly after 8:30 yesterday morning when he heard the train coming and started to run. However, he did not make it to the other side and was struck and thrown down an embankment. The engineer put on the train's emergency brakes, but was unable to avoid hitting Silva. A spokesman at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise said Silva was listed in critical condition yesterday afternoon. It was not immediately clear how fast the train was traveling.
