Looking for Something to do Tonight? Meet a Couple of Explorers

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (News Release) – Looking for something to do tonight?  Step back in time with a couple of famous explorers.

In observance of Idaho Day 2016, the Herrett Center for Arts and Science will present a one-time free showing of the IMAX film “Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West” at 6 p.m. today at the Faulkner Planetarium. Seating is limited to the first 144 individuals requesting tickets in person on that day, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the center’s front desk.

In 2014 the Idaho Legislature established an official Idaho Day to commemorate the creation of the Idaho Territory by President Abraham Lincoln on March 4, 1863.

Representative Linden Bateman introduced the legislation and says that Idaho Day is intended to educate Idahoans about the state and all that it offers.

The Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition opened the west to the U.S. following the Louisiana Purchase. This brave and hearty group of men, along with one woman and her infant child, set out in an effort to explore the territory, stake the claim for the United States and attempt to find an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean.

While not a part of the Louisiana Purchase, the expedition passed through what is now Idaho, entering at Lemhi Pass, crossing the Bitterroot Mountains and emerging onto the Weippe Prairie before continuing on to the Pacific. Their efforts forged the way for others who would later follow to settle the west, Idaho included.

“Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West” is narrated by Jeff Bridges and uses actors to recreate the Corps of Discovery Expedition.
