Lion’s Gate Enters Mobile Gaming Arena With Next Games Partnership

Canadian-American film studio Lion’s Gate is poking its head into the mobile gaming world with a newly announced partnership with Finnish development house Next Games.

Gamasutra is reporting that Lion’s Gate has invested an unknown, but substantial sum of money in Next Games, a free-to-play developer founded by former developers for Rovio, Disney and Supercell. Next Games is currently working on a free-to-play mobile game based on AMC’s The Walking Dead series.

Earlier this year, Lion’s Gate launched an Interactive Ventures and Games division, headed up by former CEO and Co-Founder of Nerdist Industries, Peter Levin. The division is tasked with supporting, investing in and creating games based on films from Lion’s Gate’s library. Specifically, The Hunger Games series is set for an upcoming mobile title developed by Kabam, though presumably, future Hunger Games projects will be handled by Next Games.

Outside of the Hunger Games franchise, Lion’s Gate’s film collection doesn’t exactly lend itself to game remakes. Movies like Reservoir Dogs, Kickboxer, Total Recall (the original), and Young Guns are a bit past their prime, and are unlikely to see mobile game spin-offs. The rest of their film roster consists of heavy dramas like Hotel Rwanda, “chick-flicks,” like Dirty Dancing and old people movies like On Golden Pond. Interestingly, Lion’s Gate also owns the rights to the disastrous 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, but somehow we can’t see a mobile game coming out of that project any time soon.
