Lady Antebellum brought a unique spin to the Christmas classic ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ during the 2013 ‘CMA Country Christmas’ special, focusing on military personnel who will celebrate the holidays far from their loving families.
The trio’s performance was moving and melancholy, and at times, it was joyful. A slideshow played in the background showing kids being reunited with their parents in service, troops celebrating the holiday with Santa and lots of hugging couples overjoyed by being back together.
Lady A sang the song in stunning harmony, and the audience was deeply moved by their performance, with the applause lingering long after the singing stopped and the show cut to a commercial. It was definitely impactful, reminding viewers that not everyone will get to open stockings with their parents, kids or close friends this holiday season.
‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943. It is sung from the point of view of an overseas soldier during WWII, who would be home for Christmas — if only in his dreams.
