Labor Day Travel Expected to be Up

Highway, Benito Baeza

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — More people in the eight-state Mountain West region are expected to make a Labor Day getaway compared with last year. AAA predicts 2.4 million people in the region will travel 50 miles or more during the three-day weekend. That’s a 3.2 percent increase compared with Labor Day 2011. AAA spokesperson Rolayne Fairclough says many people surveyed indicate they’ll still be traveling in spite of the weak economy, but plan to cut back on expenses such as hotel rooms to save money. More than 2 million residents are expected to drive to their destinations, while more than 200,000 are going by air and another 200,000 are taking an alternate mode of transportation, such as a train or bus. The region includes Idaho, Nevada, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming as well as several other states
