POST FALLS, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho yellow Lab named Dakota is being credited with rescuing a 7-pound Yorkshire terrier named Cory from a hawk. Steve Groves says Dakota on Tuesday barked and bolted from his home south of Post Falls and out of sight into the woods.

He tells the Coeur d'Alene Press  that moments later a hawk flew off and a short time after that Dakota and Cory returned home. He says 8-year-old Cory had cuts on both sides of his back, and that he and Cory's veterinarian agreed Cory's wounds came from talons.

Groves says even if the hawk couldn't fly away with Cory, the bird likely would have eaten him on the ground. He says Cory now prefers to stay inside and close to home.
