Kira Isabella Tackles Tough Subject in ‘Quarterback’ Video

Canadian singer Kira Isabella might be only 20 years old, but she isn’t afraid to tackle tough subject matter. The singer’s latest single and video, ‘Quarterback,’ addresses the subject of date rape in a poignant and sensitive way.

“A great song makes you feel something and can cause you to open your eyes, mind and heart,” Isabella tells Rolling Stone Country. “This song confronts assault and bullying on such a grand scale that anyone who has ever been bullied will be able to relate to it on some level.”

The song was written by hit tunesmiths Rivers Rutherford, Bobby Hamrick and Marty Dodson.

“When I was a kid listening to songs that were talking about very mature subject matter, I had no clue what they were talking about,” Rutherford recalls to Billboard. “I just liked the song. And that’s kind of the way I tried to do it, so that my seven-year-old niece wouldn’t know what we were talking about, but would like the melody and know it’s about a quarterback and a girl that plays in the band. And yet, my college-freshman daughter and my wife, other people I played the song for, would get it.”

“‘Quarterback’ is so well written that you walk away feeling the hurt, anger, fear and complete aloneness of the lead character,” Isabella adds. “You’re able to walk in her shoes and feel her desperation and emptiness.”

The song is Isabella’s debut single from her new album, which will be released on HitShop Records. But while the Ottawa native knows the subject matter is risky, it was a chance she was willing to take.

“Of course, there was a little bit of apprehension that some people would be hesitant to play it, but I just feel like it’s something that’s so important,” she explains. “It’s a story that’s so incredibly relevant to my generation. I just felt like it was a story that really needs to be told, and country music is a perfect platform for that.”

Isabella released two videos for the song. The more mature, darker new ending is seen above, and the original, happier ending is below.
