Kinect 2 for Windows Pre-Orders Now Open

Microsoft

The Kinect 2.0 originally bundled with the Xbox One will soon be available as a stand-alone product for Windows according to Microsoft.

The Kinect for Windows V2 Sensor product page appeared on the Microsoft Store, announcing a release date of July 15 and a price point of $200. Pre-orders are open now for the pricey peripheral. The page boasts that the new Kinect “gives developers more of the precision, responsiveness, and intuitive capabilities they need to develop interactive voice- and gesture-based applications for the Windows desktop and Windows Store.”

Many were wondering how the Xbox One Kinect would be handled after Microsoft announced it was separating the device from the console and selling the Xbox One by itself for $399. While Microsoft has yet to make any mention of when or how much the standalone Kinect 2.0 will cost for those who chose to jump on the Xbox One bandwagon without the camera add-on, this $200 price point for the PC version is a bit worrisome. Asking consumers to pay the equivalent of $600 for what they could get for $500 is a bit outrageous. That being said, there is no official price point or release date for the lone Kinect 2.0 for the Xbox One. This is just our worry based on the PC price.

When the original Kinect arrived for PC, many developers used it to create some rather interesting prototypes and experimental software. However, the practical applications were very limited for most consumers. Perhaps the much improved sensor and speech capabilities will offer even more intriguing prospects on the PC front. They’ll just be a little pricey.
