Ketchum to Fine Residents Who Pile Snow on City Property

KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) — The central Idaho town of Ketchum will begin fining residents who pile snow on city property.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports that the Ketchum City Council voted 4-0 Monday to ticket and fine people $150 for removing snow from private property and putting it in public areas. Public Works Director Robyn Mattison says piles of snow have created dangerous driving situations. She showed the council photographs of snow blocking stop signs, covering fire hydrants and obstructing driveway views.

Mattison also says the piles can make streets narrower, which can be a problem for fire engines. The new regulation allows people to move snow from sidewalks into streets, curbs and gutters, but snow from private property must be stored on-site or hauled away.
