On the night of June 20, 2016, Deven Schulz of Jerome and her boyfriend, Baily Hesley of Nampa, were driving at the intersection of 200 N and 300 W. According to police reports, their vehicle failed to yield at that stop sign and was hit by another vehicle in the driver's side door. Deven and Baily were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deven's mother and her uncle, Deputy Neil Schulz remember the anguish of that night.

Neil Schulz: My mom had called me asking about an accident she had heard about on the police scanner. I told her that I didn't know anything about an accident, but I would try to find out. She told me that she believed that my niece and her boyfriend were in that accident. I called my sister and asked her if she knew anything. She told me that all she knew was that the kids weren't answering their phones.

Deven's mom: That night, when we drove out there, I didn't want to believe that it was my daughter and her boyfriend that was out there. I screamed. I cried. I held onto my husband. I threw up several times. It was utter shock, you know. And, especially seeing the car's destruction. Just realizing that it's our child out here and we'll never see her again. It should have never happened to our family is the way I feel. This happens to other people, not us. You know what I mean?

You think that accidents like this are just something you hear on the news, until it happens to you or someone in your family. It just takes the words of a mother who has lived through this terrible experience to be reminded that tragedy isn't just something that only happens to other people.

Special thanks to the Schulz family for their amazing courage in being willing to share their story to try and help others.
