Jerome Man Released from 30 Years in Jail Arrested

BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) -- A Jerome man who had his first-degree murder conviction overturned after more than 30 years is back behind bars. Jaimi Dean Charboneau was booked into the Ada County Jail on Monday.

He's charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or instrument and burglary. The Ada County Sheriff's Office said a woman called dispatch at around 1:20 p.m. Monday and reported that she returned to her home in the 12600 block of West Gambrell Street in Star to find a man hiding in a closet.

The woman knows Charboneau and recognized the man as him, the sheriff's office said. The woman said Charboneau threatened her with a weapon, then she ran to a neighbor's house and called 911. The sheriff's office said Charboneau fled in his vehicle after the woman left the house.

Officials said he called dispatch a short time later and reported that the woman held him hostage at the West Gambrell Street residence. Charboneau told deputies he escaped and drove to a parking lot at Chinden and Linder. Deputies met with Charboneau and, based on evidence and information collected during the investigation, he was arrested.

Charboneau made national headlines when he was released from prison last year. KTVB was there as the 56-year-old posted bond and walked out of the Jerome County Jail a free man. Charboneau was convicted of shooting and killing his ex-wife, Marilyn Arbaugh, back in 1985. But after some new evidence came to light, a district judge overturned Charboneau's conviction and granted him a new trial. Charboneau is scheduled to be arraigned in Ada County Tuesday.
