JEROME, Idaho (KLIX) – A cleanup day originally planned for this Saturday in Jerome has been postponed for one week due to inclement weather.

The second annual Jerome Cleanup Day is now scheduled for Saturday, May 14. Volunteers will meet that day at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind the College of Southern Idaho-Jerome Center. So far the city is expecting about 100 people to participate in the five-hour event, though it would like to see even more volunteers.

“We’re hoping to have residents come out and show their community spirit,” said City Planner Esmeralda Chavez, noting that if you can’t attend the event there’s another way you can take part: improve your own property. “We want to make Jerome a better place.”

Four sections of the city will be targeted for cleanup, she said – north and south Lincoln Avenue and east and west Main Street. After street cleanup, the fire department will hose down the roads before a street sweeper comes through to tidy up. Some buildings also will receive a facelift with new paint.

The interfaith community has been informed of the event, she said. So far, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. Jerome’s Catholic Church and Believers Church are committed to be there, but Chavez hopes to see more sign up.

The first cleanup day kicked off last year by the Jerome Chamber of Commerce, but this year the city got on board along with other local sponsors.

Chavez said she was disappointed that the potential for rain this Saturday caused it to be rescheduled for another week until she realized next week might work even better. The city on that day will partner with Jerome Fire Department to install smoke alarms in homes that do not have any. A specific neighborhood where a high number of fire calls originate will be targeted.

“We’re going to combine the events,” she said. A barbecue will be held afterward for the volunteers.

“I brought my 7-year-old last year. One thing kids can do is that they sure can pull weeds,” Chavez said, noting she expects good things from the annual event. “We hope to continue this effort in the future and gain momentum as it goes.”
