Jana Jones Tries Again for Idaho State Superintendent

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A Democrat who campaigned unsuccessfully to lead Idaho’s public schools in 2006 says she’ll try again to win the seat. Jana Jones, a former teacher and school administrator, announced her run yesterday. Jones lost eight years ago to current Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna, a Republican.

The vote that year was 51 percent for Luna and 49 percent for Jones. Jones says she wants safe schools, great teachers and modern, up-to-date classrooms.

In trying to jettison Luna, she aims to capitalize on her background as an educator, likely support from the Idaho Education Association teachers union — and potential lingering discontent with Luna’s “Students Come First” education overhaul, repealed by voters in 2012. Jones lives in Idaho Falls with her husband, Ross. Luna hasn’t officially announced his 2014 campaign.
