ITD to Hand Land to Idaho Tribe

US Forest Service Northern Region

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Transportation Department says it will soon transfer about 160 acres of wetlands to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The agency tells the Coeur d’Alene Press it’s transferring the ownership, easement interests and management of the five parcels worth about $1 million. The parcels are located in Kootenai County in northern Idaho. The transfer has to do with the construction and wetland restoration work involving the realignment of U.S. Highway 95 from Worley to Mica Creek crossing. The ITD under federal law is required to offset environmental impacts. To fulfill that obligation, the agency purchased private parcels in the Lake Creek drainage to transfer to the Tribe for management and protection. Four of the parcels are within the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation, and another is adjacent to the reservation.
