While there are a few commenters who defend his actions, most of the posts say that he was out of line and are calling for his dismissal.

I've watched the video myself at length and I'm sorry but I don't see this as black and white as some of you.  I don't know officer Hassani and I'm not predispositioned to either criticize or defend his actions.

That said, here are a couple of my observations about this video.

I cannot escape the feeling that the dog didn't have to be shot.  I didn't see any "point of no return." for the officer.  I'm sure pepper spray could have been used or perhaps dispatch could have been called to contact the owner and ask him to rein in his animals so the officer could do his job.

Which brings me to my second observation.  Where is the owner?  How long do your dogs need to bark out in front of your house before you attend to them?  Dogs are not allowed to roam in residential neighborhoods.  The owner of the house was clearly on the premises and did nothing to address the fact that his dogs were loose?

Would this dog be dead today if the owner had been responsible and kept his dogs behind a fence?  Would this dog have been shot if it were not left to roam public property off of a leash?

I don't think many of you will take well to my second observation but I think it's reasonable to ask for some accountability on the part of the animal owner.

Here's what some of you had to say on the show today.  Some of you who live in the area said that this isn't the first time these dogs were let out to roam the neighborhood off-leash.

While I don't find myself defending officer Hassani, I can't help but be compelled to wonder if the owner's lack of responsibility played some part in this mess.
