There is no proven way to accurately predict earthquakes. However, there is concern among seismologists that something big may be brewing in the Pacific Northwest due to the fact that there have been thousands of earthquakes in the region over the past two weeks.

Weather.com is reporting that seismologists think something bigger may be coming.

In total, more than 8,000 earthquakes have been recorded since Dec. 22, Vidale said.

"It's interesting, we don't understand it but we don't think it's dangerous," he told KOMO News. "It seems regular, but in fact it's not. The last couple of years it's been a more complicated pattern, but two years before that it was pretty regular with 14-month intervals."

It's a given that a big one will happen in our part of the country someday. The question is when.

What about Idaho? The largest earthquake ever recorded in Idaho was the 1983 Borah Peak earthquake that registered a 6.9.

Hopefully, we don't have another big event in our lifetime. But, it can't hurt to get familiar with earthquake preparedness tips on the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare website.
