When it comes to dangerous weather, there's nothing more cinematic than a tornado. 'Twister' knew this back in 1996, and if its new trailer is any indication, 'Into the Storm' knows this now in 2014. But there's one big question lingering on our minds: what can 'Into the Storm' do with highly destructive, low-pressure funnel clouds that 'Twister' didn't already accomplish?

The answer is simple and hugely evocative of modern-era blockbuster filmmaking: destroy everything. 'Into the Storm' isn't about a handful of tornados striking over the course of a few weeks -- it's about a whole bunch of tornadoes inexplicably hitting a town at once and pulverizing it, Roland Emmerich style. Sure, the 'Twister' comparisons will fly fast, but the 'Into the Storm' trailer makes the film look more like a special effects-driven horror film than a thrilling adventure.

Unfortunately, not all of those special effects look entirely finished (and the trailer does make us wonder if a CG storm can actually be truly scary), but, hey, at least it actually appears to be taking its subject matter in a different direction than we would have expected. At the very least, it'll be a special breed of preposterous.

Here's the official synopsis:

In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.  Told through the eyes and lenses of professional storm chasers, thrill-seeking amateurs, and courageous townspeople, 'Into the Storm' throws you directly into the eye of the storm to experience Mother Nature at her most extreme.

'Into the Storm' will destroy your neighborhood and drop large objects on your house on August 8, 2014. Director Steven Quale of 'Final Destination 5' fame is behind the camera on this one.
