BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A new report suggests Idaho may have to agree to changes to its landmark 1995 nuclear waste cleanup agreement with the federal government if it's to continue to bring nuclear materials to the Idaho National Laboratory for research and testing.

According to a draft, 52-page report by a commission studying Idaho's nuclear future, the alternative could be the INL losing its designation as the lead nuclear energy laboratory — and the migration of the site's research to other places.

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's Leadership in Nuclear Energy Commission has been meeting for months, to get a handle on how Idaho can best exploit its ties to nuclear energy — and help keep Idaho's nuclear-powered economy vibrant. Public comment is being taken, in advance of a final report early next year.
