MURPHY, Idaho (AP) — A western Idaho woman who was charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter and having her other children help burn the girl's body in a barrel has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Veronica Herrera of Homedale was sentenced Thursday.

She pleaded guilty in April to involuntary manslaughter, failure to report a death, destruction of evidence and three counts of injury to a child. Judge Thomas Ryan said Herrera will have to serve at least 15 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

Herrera told police her daughter died after falling and bumping her head, but she didn't report the death out of fear of losing custody of her other children. Prosecutors believed the girl was abused, but a forensic study of the girl's bones couldn't determine the cause of the death.
