CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — A 15-year-old southwest Idaho boy has died in an accidental shooting.

Caldwell Police say the boy was handling a stolen handgun at the Caldwell home of a friend when it discharged and struck him in the head on Friday.

Relatives identified the boy as Israel Briones.

Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris ruled the shooting an accident.

Authorities say they withheld information until Wednesday to conduct an investigation.

Caldwell Police Chief Chris Allgood says the shooting was initially reported as a suicide but that turned out to be incorrect.

Allgood says there's no evidence of a cover-up by others in the home at the time of the shooting and there's no question Israel had the gun when it fired.

Investigators say adult family members didn't know the juveniles had the gun.
