LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho State Police trooper who fired three shots at a vehicle being driven by a man the trooper says tried to run him over has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Lewiston Tribune reports in a story on Wednesday that Trooper Hugh Powell was placed on leave following the shooting on Thursday.

Court records say Powell pursued 31-year-old David R. Pegram of Emmett, who was driving a stolen pickup.

Police say Pegram surpassed 100 mph and drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 95 before Powell bumped the pickup and it rolled, but landed upright.

Powell says he exited his vehicle and Pegram tried to run him over so he fired three shots. Pegram wasn't hit, but crashed after a mile and was later taken into custody.
