IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — A Pocatello man who accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend has been sentenced to serve at least seven years in prison before becoming eligible for parole. The Post Register reports District Judge Joel Tingey sentenced 25-year-old Kevin McQuilliams Monday to 20 years in prison in the death of 34-year-old Annarae Ponce. McQuilliams pleaded guilty in April to involuntary manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. McQuilliams says he never meant to shoot anyone. Court records state that he threatened a 16-year-old with the gun.

McQuilliams says he hit someone with the pistol's handle when the gun went off, killing Ponce. After the shooting, he fled with his and Ponce's 3-year-old son to California, where he was arrested hours later.
