BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) -- A man was taken to the hospital after he hit an elk with his motorcycle on westbound Idaho 21 early Tuesday morning.

According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. about a mile north of Hilltop. The motorcycle rider told deputies he saw a herd of elk, then crashed into one that was in the road. The man, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle by the impact.

He was taken by ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. The man's name has not been released, and the extent of his injuries is unknown. The elk was killed in the crash.
