BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A 35-year-old Boise man who prosecutors say passed about three dozen phony $50 notes in Idaho has been sentenced to 15 months behind bars. William W. Hanson had already pleaded guilty to one count of passing counterfeit bills before Tuesday’s sentencing in U.S. District Court.

According to his plea agreement, Hanson passed a counterfeit $50 note at a restaurant in Cambridge, Idaho. Hanson admitted to knowing the note was in fact a $5 note, bleached and altered to look like the more valuable bill.

Prosecutors say a subsequent investigation revealed Hanson passed 35 counterfeit $50 notes in Burley, Twin Falls, Boise, Garden City, Nampa, Eden, Horseshoe Bend, Donnelly, McCall, New Meadows, Council, and Cambridge. In addition to his prison term, Hanson must pay $1,550 in restitution to the victims.
