IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho Falls man shocked several times with a Taser during an encounter with police is still in a coma and listed in critical condition. Idaho Falls Police Sgt. Phil Grimes says 44-year-old Ronald R. Mencer Jr., has been hospitalized since Sunday.

The Post Register reports Mencer was shocked by a police officer after allegedly approaching officers aggressively and with a screwdriver in one hand. Police Chief Mark McBride said officers initially tried to push Mencer away during the first encounter, but Mencer returned and tried to kick and bite them.

The Taser was then used several times to subdue Mencer. Paramedics then arrived on scene and administered CPR and a breathing bag to treat Mencer. The officer who administered the Taser shocks remains on duty.
