BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Authorities say a 69-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a car southwest of Boise while trying to retrieve his dead cat from the road. The Ada County sheriff's office responded to the crash scene just before 6 p.m. Thursday.

Doctors say the man's injuries were serious and potentially life-threatening. An investigation found the man was in the road to pick up his cat, which had been struck earlier.

Officials say there were no street lights in the area and it was dark when the collision happened. The car's driver wasn't injured. No citations have been issued. The road was closed for over three hours for the investigation.
