IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — A southeast Idaho law enforcement agency says a 28-year-old man whose residence was being searched by police died after stabbing himself with a knife.

The Blackfoot Police Department in a statement Tuesday says Kyle Eddington died Aug. 1. The agency previously released little information. The agency tells the Post Register that an officer checking storage units encountered a group of people and detained Eddington after learning he was on probation. Police and probation officers then searched Eddington's home.

Police say they planned to search a storage unit but before they could do so Eddington grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed himself. Police didn't say whether Eddington was handcuffed at that point. Eddington later died at Bingham Memorial Hospital. The Bingham County Prosecutor's Office is investigating.
