POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — A Pocatello man has pleaded not guilty to killing his 6-year-old son last year. Anthony Blake Viles has been charged with first-degree murder in the April 2012 death of Afton Allison. Allison died three days after being taken to a hospital with severe head injuries.

He had been the subject of a child-custody dispute and the state ordered the child placed with his mother. Viles was held on felony charges for injury to a child after he acknowledged striking Allison. The charge was elevated after he died. The Idaho State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/10uAxNo ) Viles waived a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Sixth District Judge Stephen Dunn set a July 16 trial date after Bannock County Public Defender Randy Schulthies told the judge there have been discussions with prosecutors about resolving the case.
