IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An Eastern Idaho man charged in the death of a toddler has pleaded not guilty. In court Monday, 20-year-old Antonio Marco Bautista pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in connection with the December 2012 death of 16-month-old Esmiie Quezada.

The child was the daughter of Bautista's girlfriend, 19-year-old Leiyah Quezada, but Bautista is not the girl's biological father. Police said the child was found unresponsive in the early morning hours of Dec. 30 and was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where she died of a skull fracture.

Seventh District Judge Joel Tingey denied a request to release Bautista from jail or reduce the bond. First-degree murder by aggravated battery is punishable by up to life in prison or death.
