BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Legislation seeking to avoid the problem of being unable to use an Idaho driver's license to board a commercial flight next year is headed to the House for approval.

The House Transportation and Defense Committee unanimously voted Monday to send the bill to the House floor. If passed in both chambers, the bill would allow Idaho's transportation agency to request a one-year extension to conform to the federal government's identification law.

In 2008, Idaho lawmakers passed legislation that banned the state from complying with the federal Real ID Act, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship in order for a license to be valid for federal use. Currently, nine states are out of compliance.

The legislation only allows officials to research alternatives and does not aim to change Idaho's compliance ban.
