BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Three members of Idaho's congressional delegation are asking the U.S. Coast Guard to reconsider its decision to deny permits to organizers of a jet boat race in northern Idaho.

The Coast Guard told organizers earlier this month it did not intend to issue permits for the "Race the Joe" event on the St. Joe River until an environmental assessment could be done on impacts to the river's bald eagle population.

The Spokesman-Review reports Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador, Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch are now asking the agency to reconsider. The Republicans sent a letter to the agency, asking it to conduct a timely review and allow the race to continue as planned. The river is a well-known nesting area for bald eagles and other birds of prey.
