"At that time, our 1st Vice Chair Mike Mathews will assume the role of Acting Chairman until a replacement is elected at our IDGOP Summer Meeting on July 22nd in Coeur d'Alene," said Yates in a prepared statement. "At which time I am confident our State Central Committee will select a Chair who will continue to lead a strong state party through the very important election cycle of 2018." Yates says he has been encouraged to run for another office, which he did not specify, and felt it necessary to resign his position.

I am committed to remaining an engaged and helpful former Chair, to ensure a smooth transition, and to support the continued success of our party and its new chairman." Steve Yates said, "I care deeply about our Party and I am proud of the work we have all accomplished together. Serving as your State Chairman has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I look forward to serving the great state of Idaho, hopefully in another capacity."

This comes as the GOP hired a new executive director. On Friday Yates announced Lyndel Strong will be taking over the spot of Executive Director from David Johnston next week. Strong is 26 and has served as a volunteer with the Idaho GOP and has chaired the Idaho Young Republicans.
