Idaho Gets Muzzle Award

Benito Baeza

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A free speech group in Virginia has released its annual “Jefferson Muzzles” awards, honoring the most egregious attempts at censorship nationwide. The so-called winners include Idaho regulators who banned the sale of Five Wives Vodka out of fear of offending tee-totaling Mormons and a Missouri legislator who wanted to make it a felony to even propose gun control legislation.

The dubious honors were announced Thursday by The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression in Charlottesville. Another Muzzle recipient included an Oklahoma school board that ordered a 5-year-old to turn his T-shirt inside-out because it featured the logo of an out-of-state university. The center’s director, Josh Wheeler, said the 22nd edition of the Muzzles is distinctive for its diversity.
