BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A new crime rate report from the FBI shows that Idaho resort towns such as Coeur d'Alene, Sun Valley and McCall had higher crime rates than most of Idaho's other towns. Boise State Public Radio reports that according to the FBI's 2013 numbers, McCall has one violent crime for every 190 residents, and one property crime for every 34 residents.

That's better than Coeur d'Alene, where the violent crime rate was one for every 179 residents and the property rate was one for every 26 residents. But both cities are much higher than Boise's rate, which was one violent crime for every 357 residents and one property crime for every 45 residents. Kevin Wolff teaches criminal justice at John Jay College in New York.

He says crime rates for resort towns often appear to be higher because their populations swell during special events or during the tourism season. That can affect the crime rate for that timespan, making the overall crime rate appear higher.
