Heavy Loads Bill Clears Idaho House Committee

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The House Transportation Committee approved a timber industry-backed plan aimed at allowing big trucks on more miles of Idaho roads. But members who voted Monday after two days of testimony from both sides want it to be accompanied by a separate measure that emphasizes how local highway districts have final discretion in approving such routes. It now heads to the full House. The Senate passed the bill.

Advocates including the Idaho Forest Group say allowing 129,000-pound trucks on more Idaho routes will help cut hauling costs and boost the economy. Foes worry larger trucks will impair safety, especially on winding northern Idaho forest highways. Idaho Forest Group lobbyist Jim Riley agreed to a companion bill, meant to clarify that local highway districts have the final say over allowing bigger trucks.
