The plastic musical instrument maestros at Harmonix have responded to increasing reports that a new Rock Band title is in development for current-gen consoles.

The Internet has been in disarray over the possibility of a new Rock Band title that would potentially grace the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Bloomberg originally reported that Harmonix was creating a new game for current-gen consoles, according to an inside source at the studio who wished to remain anonymous. This would mark the first new game in the series since 2012. The boom in popularity of Harmonix's Guitar Hero series in the early 2000s paved the way for Rock Band's success, which added vocals and drums to Hero's original format. Harmonix's success resulted in Viacom's MTV division buying Harmonix for $175 million back in 2006. The masses eventually got tired of the constant and annual push of new plastic peripherals to buy, so the series staggered for a bit over the years, resulting in Harmonix being sold to Columbus Nova (who own Daybreak Games) in 2010.

Polygon recently contacted Harmonix for a comment on Bloomberg's report and on what it has planned for the franchise. A studio representative responded with the following:

We're excited by how enthusiastic our fans have been in regards to our most recent DLC releases, and we think it's awesome that people are speculating about the future of the franchise!

While we don't have anything to announce, hundreds of thousands of unique users are still actively playing Rock Band games each month. This passion our fans have shown for Rock Band over the years suggests that rock truly hasn't died, and we've always been clear that we'd love to return to the franchise when the time is right.

Nevertheless, we're sure that Harmonix is glad to hear that the masses are still interested in the franchise. Here's to hoping they don't force yearly game and peripheral releases down our throats and let the franchise properly grow.
