LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — The trial for a 19-year-old northern Idaho man charged with rape has been delayed for five months after nearly half of 80 potential jurors failed to show up for selection.

Nez Perce County Deputy Prosecutor April Smith says only 42 people showed up at the courthouse Monday for Peter H. Bakker's trial. The Lewiston Tribune reports that Bakker is charged with rape and sexual penetration of a foreign object for allegedly raping a 17-year-old Lewiston girl he met on Facebook.

Smith says it's common for a handful of potential jurors fail to show but Monday's extremely poor turnout was unusual. She added that she didn't know how the judge would proceed with the jurors who didn't show up. The trial is now scheduled for Dec. 1.
