Google’s Acquisition of Twitch Failed Due to Antitrust Concerns

We have learned why Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement in terms of YouTube’s acquisition of the video game-streaming service.

Forbes reports that Google did not buy Twitch earlier this summer because of concerns about the antitrust issues that could have accompanied the acquisition. We reported yesterday that Amazon has officially acquired Twitch for approximately $970 million. One source claims that Google and Twitch could not even agree on a potential breakup fee in case the deal did not happen. Many of these antitrust issues stem from Google’s Internet-searching technology.

“Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month– from The International, to breaking the world record for Mario, to gaming conferences like E3,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. “Like Twitch, we obsess over customers and like to think differently, and we look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community.”

We should note that Amazon’s set-top box, Fire TV, launched this past April. Also, Double Helix Games, the developers of the 2013 Killer Instinct reboot, were acquired by Amazon this past February. Along with the acquisition of Twitch for nearly $1 billion, it is very clear that Amazon is getting very serious about its ventures into gaming.
