Good Flows Expected at Shoshone Falls

SHOSHONE FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Water managers say southern Idaho's scenic Shoshone Falls should have high enough flows to please tourists this year.

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Hydrologist Mike Beus tells The Times-News that the falls, dubbed the "Niagara of the West," should have a month and a half of significant flows.

Twin Falls Parks and Recreation Director Dennis Bowyer says the falls are the area's most popular tourist attraction, drawing a quarter million visitors each year.

Beus says the American Falls Reservoir upstream is at about 90 percent capacity, and the dam could start sending water downstream to the falls in a little more than a week.

Right now, about 300 cubic feet of water are falling over the falls every second.
