‘Glee’ Series Finale: How Would Ryan Murphy End the Show if Cory Monteith Hadn’t Died?
It's hard to say if 'Glee' would have followed the same trajectory toward a season 6 series finale if not for lead actor Cory Monteith's untimely death, though series creator Ryan Murphy always had in mind how the series would have ended between Monteith and co-lead Lea Michele. Want to know what 'Glee''s very last shot would have been?
"The ending of Glee is something I have never shared with anyone, but I always knew it," Murphy told attendees of a private memorial service eulogizing Monteith back in July, as transcribed by Entertainment Weekly. "I’ve always relied on it as a source of comfort, a North Star."
During the eulogy, Murphy explained that the final season of FOX's musical hit would have seen Monteith and Lea Michele's characters Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry divided, but ultimately reuniting where their relationship first began:
At the end of season 6, Lea [Michele]‘s Rachel was going to have become a big Broadway star, the role she was born to play. Finn was going to have become a teacher, settled down happily in Ohio, at peace with his choice and no longer feeling like a Lima loser. The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn’s glee club. “What are you doing here?” he would ask. “I’m home,” she would reply. Fade out. The end.
As it is, Monteith's memorial episode "The Quarterback" paid tribute to the would-be ending, when Rachel ultimately return to Ohio by the episode's end, sharing her vision of hers and Finn's future together to Mr. Schuester as they memorialized the character with a plaque in the rehearsal room.
We'd imagine that 'Glee''s upcoming sixth season will still likely end on the note of Rachel Berry attaining major Broadway success, though how the overall story's resolution changes without Finn remains to be seen. What say you? Would 'Glee''s original ending have made for the perfect resolution to the series? How should writers handle the ultimate finale after Cory Monteith's passing?
